Addiction is generally defined as the habitual, compulsive use of and / or a physical dependence on a substance. If you or a loved one has an alcohol or drug dependency, finding a treatment center should be a priority. However, it is also important that you find the right center for you. While any treatment is better than none, you increase your chances of effective treatment if you find a center that is compatible with the needs and goals of the patient.
Look for a treatment center that:
Employs professionals. While not everyone at a treatment center needs to be a doctor, the staff should be specially trained to deal with people who are suffering from addiction. Treatment should always be supervised by a medical professional, and the facility should be recognized within the medical community.
Specializes in the appropriate area. Many treatment centers specialize in a particular type of patient (e.g. women, teens, the mentally ill) or in a particular substance (e.g. alcohol, heroin, pain killers). If possible, pick the treatment center whose expertise best matches your individual situation. But remember, any treatment is better than no treatment at all. Just because a center specializes in alcohol addiction doesn’t mean it can’t treat an addiction to pain killers. The most important thing is to just get help.
Treats the whole person. Addiction is rarely just a matter of physical dependence. Although breaking the physical dependence is important, a good treatment center will address the physical, social and emotional needs of the patient as well.
Provides follow-up and support. Addiction is a lifelong condition, and relapses are common. A good treatment center will have a mechanism for supporting patients even after they leave. This may include the provision of a sponsor, continued outpatient care or referral to a program such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) or Narcotics Anonymous (NA).
Dealing with an addiction, whether it’s yours or a loved one’s, can be a trying and traumatic experience. Enlisting the help of a treatment center will lessen the burden and guide you most firmly along the road to recovery.
